EXPLORATION OF SAND BY-PASSING PROJECT AT THE JETTYSubmitted by MMonti on Sun, 06/14/2009 - 20:20
Per my June update, I attended the Public Workshop meeting on June 10th. There is concern that our sand resource will be gone in eleven years. This project, which is in the beginning fact finding stage, is simply a method to store some or all the 130,000 cubic yards of sand required annually to maintain our beaches directly S of the Inlet. This sand would be available to place on our beaches as it is currently done. Currently there are two options. In both, a 2,300 ft. long basin is constructed beginning just W of the North side of the Jetty. The 6 groin project that I spoke of in my update is a sand retention This process is being widely used up and down our East Coast of Florida without many ill affects- the only ones noted were that the S beaches were not getting enough sand. The questions and comments were good, and Taylor Engineering did an easily understood “down to the public” presentation. I will continue to follow the progress of the sand trapping and the groin project. Arden Peck-Chair Beach and Parks Committee
